Lets talk about the KeywordDiscovery.com Keyword Research Tool

I was hired to develop a massive keyword database for a corporation in Madison Wisconsin. This keyword research report required lateral research and lots of exotic keywords. My friend Stacy from Prominent Placement sent me a link to Keyword Discovery. She mentioned running into the Trellian guys at the Search Engine Strategies Conference in San Jose. So I purchased a one month subscription (around 47.00 dollars I think) and gleefully logged on to Keyworddiscovery.com.

Chris Lee is one of the creators of the Keywords Analyzer and Adsense Dominator software. Apparently Chris uses Keyword Discovery all the time and recommends it. I respect Chris because of his killer software products, but I want to add some negatives to his "thumbs up" assessment of keyworddiscovery.com.

Another strong advocate of the Keyword Discovery subscription service is Jay Stockwell who has written the infinitive e-book on keyword research software. Jay is the only guy crazy enough to purchase and test every single keyword tool on the market. Besides me, I know of no other person who has done this . . . or at least none who will admit it.

First of all, I am going to be tougher on keyword research software than these two keyword research pundits. I know that Chris Lee's customers are largely affiliate marketers and niche miners. While I agree with that Keyword Discovery exceeds Wordtracker limitations by providing far more keywords and faster, it has some weaknesses of its own.

I must also admit that few people would make the demands upon the Keyword Discovery system like I made, and fewer still will have the  expectations I have when performing keyword research. In all fairness, I believe the Keyword Research Tool Trellian is fantastic for grabbing new keyword ideas and generating thousands of keyword ideas.

Hot or Not:

1. Ease of use and overall feel. In other words, does the software feel wonky? Wonky means the user-interface feels tight, or unstable. It does not feel stable, or it crashes a little too much. This could be because the designer hurried through the programming, or that they hired a bad programer:

This web-bases service felt wonky to me from the get-go. I had to get cutomer support on the first day I used it, because it had bugs. I am sure they are fixing the problems. But the keyword import tool absolutely sucked. (as of september, 2005). I admit that I was trying to import over 400 words at a time, but that never presented a problem for wordtracker.  Wordtracker does not provide as many keyword suggestions however.

2. Is there an ability to export data in a useful format. This means that I can extract my keywords or my html pages or whatever- and import them into other programs for other purposes. Thi srating only applies to programs, not ebooks.

They provided me with a fairly decent CSV export, although it has a problem with large amounts of data being turned into a csv file. Numbers start to drop off the list. Wonky.

3. Value Rating. Was the software priced fairly for what I can get elsewhere in comparison. In other words, did I get real value, or should I return the product because it is just like everything else. Can I get the same results (or better) with different or even FREE methods and keyword research or software tools? This category takes a complete consideration of all types of potential users including the different requirements they demand. Is the software useful to everyone? This includes SEO's (search engine optimization experts), niche miners, pay per click advertisers, and adsense publishers. The more categories of use the software or program covers, the higher the rating in this category.

The best value in this tool is the HUGE number of keywords you can extract. I still question where the data comes from. The boys at Trellian refuse to give us details about where the keywords come from. That bugs me, because it is always relevant to keyword research.

4. Customer service rating and helpfulness. Was the creator of the software supportive, or did the customer follow-up feel adequate and helpful.

Keyword discovery had a live help interface on the website. Excellent follow up with wonky software bugs.
