Let's not pretend that you don’t already have secret doubts about the accuracy of subscription keyword research tools such as Wordtracker or Keyword Discovery. Many of my clients have expressed similar doubts in the back of their minds.
If you suspect that the Wordtracker database could only represent a fragment of what is truly being queried across all search engines, you are correct.
Any intelligent person would have these nagging suspicions after using the Wordtracker tool long enough. The Wordtracker numbers just don’t work out when viewed outside of the Wordtracker mini-universe. The "estimated" query results simply don’t add up to seriously dependable data when taken literally. As our mathematician exclaimed, “a statisticians would wonder if the keyword sample provided by Wordtracker.com is anything more than an anecdotal survey.” After he sat down and crunched more Wordtracker statistics, Leroy Diener went on to say, “I feel confident that the search volume numbers provided by Wordtracker and Keyword Discovery are accurate in “relative terms” but not in absolute terms.”We have provided some of Leroy’s math equations for you to review.
Amit Singhal, head information retrieval engineer at Google claims that over 50% of the 200 million daily searches on Google are absolutely unique.
When I first heard this number, it completely blew my mind. It also changed the way I looked at Search Engine Optimization and keyword research.
Over HALF of the daily keyword searches on Google are keyword combinations that have never been typed in the query box before.
Don’t get frustrated about Keyword Research
I am not suggesting that you throw the baby out with the bath water. The fact is that you simply MUST use multiple keyword research tools in order to put keyword research data in perspective when pulling it from free keyword software tools or keyword software subscription services like Wordtracker or Keyword Discovery. I still use Wordtracker and KeywordDiscovery frequently. Heaven knows I’ve spent thousands of hours over the years performing keyword research using these kinds of tools. The difference is that I am now a seasoned keyword research analyst and understand both the limitations and benefits of such tools. I have learned that there are many different qualities and types of keywords, and many of these keyword phrases are not gleaned from Wordtracker.
